Needless to say, the air vents seem to have hair growing in them and the fan is a bit "soiled" (I can see it through the vents at the base of the monitor arm). What is the best way for me to clean out the vents/fan? Can I use a vacuum attachment to suck out the dirt (with computer unplugged) or will static E be a prob? I just want my imac to breath a bit easier now the warm weather is back......

I have had a Kensington wireless keyboard on my iMac from day 1 (about 5 years ago). Occasionally when I turned the computer on I found a page saying that the "Bluetooth" device could not be found. To my knowledge I have no bluetooth devices at all. Yesterday that message appeared when I tried to open the computer from sleep mode. Not only did it appear, but the keyboard was completely unrecognized. Oddly, the wireless mouse that came with it is still completely functional.

What I have tried so far: Turning computer off and on again using main power button; unplugging computer while it was open; disabling Bluetooth in system preferences; putting new batteries in the K Keyboard; reinstalling the K Keyboard software; starting the computer using the old Mac keyboard and then attaching the K one.

Is it possible that the keyboard had died? How would I be able to find that out? Has anyone experienced or heard of a similar problem? Should I just go out and get another keyboard or is there someplace to go for a repair? Sometimes owning a computer makes me feel like I live on a lonely planet in the middle of a very large universe. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Apple Inc. agreed to pay refunds of $25 to $79 to as many as 2.3 million Macintosh computer owners to resolve claims that some of its power adapters were prone to spark.

Customers who bought certain replacement adapters for PowerBook and iBook computers are eligible for the settlement, according to documents filed in federal court in San Jose. U.S. District Court Judge James Ware granted preliminary approval of the agreement March 24.

The class-action suit, filed in 2006, alleged that Apple misrepresented problems with the power adapters. In 2001, Apple recalled about 570,000 adapters sold with PowerBooks after reports of overheating. Apple advised customers to stop using the adapters and offered free replacements.

The adapter "dangerously frays, sparks and prematurely fails to work," the plaintiffs said in court filings.

Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., will give cash payments to customers who bought an adapter made by Apple or another company to replace a failed one, according to court documents.

A hearing on final approval of the settlement was scheduled for Sept. 8.

I checked the hard-drive and it said that there was a problem with volume that the disk utility could not repair. It might happen 4-5 times an hour, doesn't matter what app I'm using. It'll flash with just a DVD running, or while I'm Tribeing or Paging or Appleworking.
What to Expect from the Open iPhone
Freed to design software for the iPhone, programmers outside Apple plan to revolutionize the handheld.
By Kate Greene

With its easy-to-use touch screen and slick software--including Apple's iTunes--the iPhone is the darling of the cell-phone industry. And last week, Apple made an announcement that only enhances the phone's appeal. The Cupertino, CA, company unveiled a set of new features for the phone that allow it to work well with business software, including e-mail and data-synching software. And crucially, the company released the instructions for the iPhone's hardware, offering a software development kit (SDK) that lets programmers outside Apple peek inside the gadget and write their own applications for it.

Anyone who uses an iPhone will soon reap the benefits of the phone's new capabilities--from accessing business e-mail, to running familiar desktop programs, to exploiting the built-in accelerometer for new gesture-based interfaces.

"This is a huge deal," says Ken Case, CEO of Omni Group, a company that implements ideas from David Allen's Getting Things Done in organizational software for the Mac operating system. "Apple has built this small handheld computer that's based around the same fundamental technology of the Mac. What [the SDK] means for us is that we now have the opportunity to build software that people have been clamoring for since the iPhone was announced." Case says that Omni plans to make an iPhone version of its "to-do list on steroids" that will capture data using the phone's camera and incorporate location information made available through the development kit. Omni's software could, for instance, automatically pull up a list of grocery items when it recognizes that the user has entered a store.

Businesses will be more likely to dole out iPhones to employees because, in addition to e-mail compatibility and synching ability, Apple is now offering a way for employees to access business servers that are behind firewalls. Moreover, the phones can be cleared of all data remotely, if they are lost or stolen. And Salesforce.com, a business services company, has already built applications using the iPhone development kit. "I think what you're going to see is, just the release of the enterprise integration alone is going to drive substantial business sales [of the iPhone]," says Raven Zachary, a software developer who started iPhoneDevCamp, a series of workshops to spur development of Web-based iPhone applications. "You'll see people leaving their BlackBerrys at the office."

The health-care industry, specifically, could benefit from the open iPhone, says Steven Frank, a developer and founder of Panic, a Mac software company. EPocrates, a medical-software company, demonstrated its iPhone application at Apple's press event last Thursday, and Frank immediately thought of his wife, a doctor. "She uses and loves her iPhone but still carries around a Palm handheld solely to run ePocrates and other similar medical databases," he says. Frank predicts that when those databases are accessible on the iPhone, his wife will leave her Palm at home. "The important thing here is that Apple was of course never going to supply a prescription-drug database application for the iPhone. The SDK enables that to be made, which opens up a whole new class of people who can now realistically use an iPhone as their sole mobile device."

When the iPhone was first announced last June, programmers were excited by the possibilities it presented, but Apple withheld a lot of information about the inner workings of the phone's software. Instead of promoting downloadable applications, Apple encouraged the development of Web-based programs that ran inside the Safari browser. But that limited the programs' capabilities. For instance, they could not take full advantage of the touch screen or the three-axis accelerometer, and they couldn't store data on the phone's flash-memory chip. Some programmers turned to hacking the phone--in essence reverse-engineering instructions that control the hardware--so that they could build their own applications, including virtual guitars. (See "The Next Generation of iPhone Hacks.")

Some of the software that the early iPhone hackers developed, such as the virtual guitar and games that use the accelerometer, illustrates the potential of the SDK. The entrepreneur and iPhone expert Christopher Allen, for instance, envisions writing software that could filter calls or text messages depending on the position of the phone: laying the phone flat on your desk might indicate that you want to accept only work-related calls. (See "The iPhone's Untapped Potential.")

Nonetheless, says Allen, it's still not a complete free-for-all. It's not clear whether programmers will have access to certain layers of information about the phone, such as those that could allow them to build Bluetooth peripherals like keyboards. Allen says that he hasn't yet had a chance to dive deeply into the SDK, but he's not sure whether it will allow for software that lets iPhone users receive data, such as instant messages, while they're placing calls over the cellular network (something that's not possible now).

Already, Apple has enlisted some major companies to develop early applications that will give the public a taste of what the development kit allows. At the press event, AOL unveiled its iPhone-compatible instant-messaging program, and the game company Electronic Arts showed off Spore, a game that uses the accelerometer to control play.

While the SDK is downloadable right now, third-party programs written for the phone won't be available until June, when Apple releases the iPhone 2.0 update. At that time, people will be able to download programs via iTunes, in the same way that they download songs and movies. Allen suspects that, as it has with podcasts, Apple will promote the programs that are the most popular, "which means the quality stuff wins," he says. "That's definitely not what's happening in the cell-phone world right now: quality is not there." Of Apple opening the iPhone, Allen says, "I think this is a pivotal thing."

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me to a problem that I know has an answer but that I can't figure out! (I know it has an answer because I've resolved the problem before, I just don't remember how). As you'll see from the technology below, my hardware's all well beyond its warranty life. I'm not techie but I'm not an absolute idiot either so usually I can sort things out by searching online and apply the solutions I find. But I can't find any real solutions online (even though Linksys did actually give me one when the router was still on warranty back in the mists of time).

I have a PowerbookG4 running OSX 10.3.9 and a Linksys WRT54G that I just put back into service. I got it up and running but only partially. It connects wirelessly to most sites but won't to hotmail, tribe, facebook and any chat sites with long threads. Hotmail it can't access, and the other sites it looks like it's connecting but then it just starts to hang...though it doesn't seem to time out and if I cancel it the site name shows on the tab. It's fine with gmail and lots of other sites. Also, the ethernet ports don't seem to be working now, though they were when I first hooked it up this time. Also, I can send mail from my email program but it won't download (though it looks like it is going to and is online). My IP provider is PPOE.

It wasn't rocket science getting it sorted out last time but for the life of me I can't remember what the fix was. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

And those foreign characters are dependent on an installed font. So how do I work in photoshop and type a heart symbol or an envelope? I think I would have to choose Wingdings font and type every key both small and caps to find what I want and save an example file of the whole array for cut-and-paste later.

Greetings, everyone. :) I just bought an iMac last night. This is my first Mac, so I don't know what I'm doing yet. I want to copy the files from my XP to my iMac, and someone gave me this great link:

http://www.apple.com/getamac/movetomac/network.html

So I'm trying to set up my XP machine as a server so that I can connect the iMac directly to it. I did everything it said, and set the XP access level to level 4 for the entire C: drive, and I'm trying to set up a direct ethernet connection between my XP and my iMac (cable goes directly from the XP to the iMac). But when I connect the two computers, the LAN connection on the XP machine says, "Acquiring network address..." and then "Limited or no connectivity." If I click on "more information," it says "This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer." I click "Repair," and it tries to renew the IP address, but it is unsuccessful. Of course, I can't see the computer in the iMac's Network folder, nor can I connect through Connect to Server. I've done further investigating on the net and tried several different things, but nothing helps. It sounds like this is supposed to be relatively easy, so I think I must just be overlooking something simple and obvious, but I have no idea what it would be. Does anyone in here know how to do this, and what I might be doing wrong or what I could try? If so, I would be most grateful for your help.

Which means I'm looking at files created in Classic, or photos imported by older camera reader drivers. So I've got these 16-pixel icons from old PhotoShop or I've got JPEG previews that are made for 128-pixel icons, but not big previews. That's what's showing in Cover Flow for my legacy files in the archive.

Though Quick Look shows the whole file in full screen resolution, Cover Flow shows only the eensy old icon. How can I touch headers of the old JPEG's so they have new-world icons and previews?--without re-compressing the content file? If not for the sake of Cover Flow, at least to make sure my old files continue to upgrade to current formats.

What I mean by this is, my mail will no longer down load, all mail boxes seem to go off line. Safari won't load. Yet ALL the bars are present up top showing the connection is still strong. Sometimes I just need to click "Bring all mailboxes on line" and do a network diagnostic to get safari working again. Sometimes I have to turn the machine off and wait a minute then restart it... this all seems to defeat the whole purpose of leaving it on when I walk away and having a screen saver and sleep mode.

Is there some sort of patch or free upgrade for this prob?

The thermal filter just ...stopped working.
Unfortunately I can not say as to when exactly, so I am unsure if it correlated with any software updates.

Every filter in Photo Booth works except for the thermal filter.
When I select the thermal filter, the preview screen in Photo Booth is black.
If I try to take a photo with the thermal filter, nothing appears atop the silver background that normally frames each photo.
I have been unable to find an upgrade, though Wikipedia notes the latest version is 1.3.
I have unsuccessfully tried a reboot/uninstall/reboot/install/reboot.

Please note I am using a Macbook with a built in iSight camera.

Is anyone familiar with this problem or able to help?
Thank you.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, but on the reinstall it had my whole library and settings already there.

Is it just me or are people finding enormous amounts of small little issues with Leopard and fewer and fewer answers.
NEW ISSUES:
My lap top no longer recognizes me as the administrator… I am at a loss since I made NO changes I know y name I know my password but apparently when I installed Leopard... it changed itself and now won't let me make changes. ANY SOLUTIONS TO THIS PLEASE would be appreciated

ALSO:
I have Acrobat Pro 7, this seems to work fine as a reader... But if that was what I wanted I wouldn't have opted for "PRO" I used to be able to Chose ADOPBE PDF7.0 from my print menu and save documents as Adobe PDF files, Now it just does NOTHING, It offers more printer drivers to choose from than I knew existed and no clue as to which one it should be. WHY WOULD THIS EVEN CHANGE???

How can I fix this? I saved Items as PDF's EVERY day. Saving them as "Preview PDF's" is just a pain in the A** since I then have to open and save them in Acrobat to make changes. I know it's just a few extra steps but it's consistently a few and that becomes a lot. Please help

PS
The first issue is understandably more pressing than the second since I obviously would like to be the administrator on my own machine
