I bought a used macbook pro about a month ago - 2.4gz, 160g HD, 2g ram.
the previous owner had erased and reinstalled Tiger. I promptly installed Leopard.
Everything is peachy except for random screen flashes. The whole screen goes white for 1-4 seconds, (NOT the 1/2 second Alert Flash) then comes back to whatever it was showing before. I can't make it flash, can't figure out why it flashes or what sets it off. It doesn't seem to be related to processor-intense activity, or disk access, or temperature, or app switching... It might happen 4-5 times an hour, doesn't matter what app I'm using. It'll flash with just a DVD running, or while I'm Tribeing or Paging or Appleworking.
I've also checked in System Prefs for the "Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs" option - box not checked.
any ideas what's going on?

Re: Flashing Screen
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 2:05 AM..that's a strange one..
it's dual core® huh ?
frst off use Disk Utility to repair permissions
try bending the screen almost closed then open several times see if that makes it worse or better
might be a bad wire in the hinge or something
* scratches head *
do all the software updates you haven't done ¿
i am thinking it's hardware realted, to tell the truth..
very strange..is your hard disk almost full up ?
under System Prefernces you could try fiddling with the Display & resolutions to see if the helps \ hurts..
let us know how this proceeds..

Re: Flashing Screen
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 11:49 AMSounds like a possible logic board or inverter board problem - unless it's related to the tilt of the screen, then you might have a pinched cable (a possibility if the unit has been improperly re-assembled). You could also try booting from an OS install disk to check for a software problem (eg. if it doesn't flash when booted to another drive/OS then it could be a problem with the OS). -

Re: Flashing Screen
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 5:10 PM..yup,
Could be just the V Ram chips or something, huh ¿
c o o k e d
Get a copy of Techtool® and run it •

Re: Flashing Screen
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 1:43 PMWell I ran Techtool - no problems found.
Ran DisKutility, both Repair and Verify Permissions took about 10 minutes, then Verified Disk. When that finished I got a 1 second screen flash.
I'll try swapping some ram, but I'm thinking it's got to be a motherboard problem.

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:53 AMBad RAM would most likely give you three beeps at startup. -

Re: Flashing Screen
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 8:05 PMYes,
..One could take the RAM out..as a test...Video Ram one really shouldn't •..
i tend to think he's got some intermittant screen refresh problem that , personally i'd just live with..
When i worked in the USA Today® building in Arlington , VA.. the women were having miscarriages..serious..
They figgered out it was the flicker - the monitors were being refreshed at 60 mhz ..& the lights flickered at 55 hmz..
go figger '

Re: Flashing Screen
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 5:47 PMSponge Bob,
s l o w down now.
.mother and daughter boards do bend and chips comes un soldered.
.but take it apart to see if you can see that kind of hardware damage ƒirst..
start it up without the battery in it , plugged in, first ..make sure techtool® tells you the clock chip and the [ VRAM ] Video Random Access Memory are ok again.
It seems to me that Sony® screens and monitors had a problem with a black line occuring about 1/3 way up the screen since like..uh.. forever , ok ¿ Sony ® makes and has made all newer , post System 9.x G3 & G4 laptops for Apple®..yes they do...geeks and nerds
Let's concentrate on this aspect for a minute or 404 .
Now ...while it's running on electric power from the plug only..bend the screen shut and open and closed..observe results...
Here is what i am thinking ; a) you've got crumbs or something under the magnetic latch sensor that sets off the automatic screen saver or shutdown thingy off ...right under the trackpad..or that
b) there is a loose or frayed wire in the hinge that goes to the screen..water may have gotten in to the screen shorting one wire out , too , that's why you see a line every so often ...pixels..when they go ..are just dots •
c) close the lid now and shake it..anything loose inside ?
These suggestions all come from my having owned a ton of macintosh® laptops over the years..since the PowerBook 145 and exploding PB190 battery days..

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 4:20 AMI had this problem with a MacBook. They replaced the inverter board (internal power supply). -

Thanks for the info.

Re: Flashing Screen
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 4:24 PMyou go to the AppleCare website

Is it more than one year old?

Re: Flashing Screen
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 3:23 PM..ßob,
you'd know it if you had it..
parenthetically : Apple® care only makes sense for laptops and iDevices that get dropped, broken , or wet on occasion •
Mahalo for that info Lian ..we were hoping that his techtool® would let him know a bit about his power supply..yet...
.power management in most portable mac® devices has a l w a y s been kinda' ƒlaky
keeping in mind that Apple® Corp. is essentially a design - software studio

Re: Flashing Screen
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 4:25 PMcould this be an iCal alert???
or some other alert?
do you watch "Activity Monitor" when this happens?
-
-
Re: Flashing Screen
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 5:05 PM.yup.,
.it very well may be..this is why ..under : system preferences - accounts - startup items..i remove the iCal® and the iTunes® helper apps. figuring that if Apple® can not build it in to the main application , i don't want some hanger-on application mucking things up for me , also . Yet, i use a laptop that is not always on-line functioning as an internet appliance , Mssrs. Jobs & Ellison
Sometimes it also reminds me a bit too much of that 32 bit byte Data General® Eclipse 'puter in the book , " Soul of a New Machine ," by Tracey Kidder, and the reference made to designing 'puters with a bag on the side.
a rant , i realize & sorry , lol , just saying , " Where are all the Data General® , D E Cs®, Wangs®, Eagles®, Compaqs®, Kaypros® , HP's® & TRS-80's®.. today ? "

Re: Flashing Screen
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:19 PMThis Mac has no Apple care, it's about a year and a half old. I don't run iCal ever, and rarely do iTunes on this Mac. I've started Activity Monitor, don't see anything unusual there...
I mainly use it to take all my client info with me when I'm running around working on (under) boats - the mac stays in the truck tho. sometimes I use it to watch movies in bed, but I always fall asleep. Is there a Preferences pane for that?

Re: Flashing Screen
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 10:22 PMRobert ,
..We've tried • Here's my current theory ; There is one or two or even three V Ram chips inside it..i tend to think now that one of the registers is bad..one of the banks of the video random access memory has been fried. or one of the pins has come un seated - unsoldered & loose
This is not a fatal error and one, unfortunately , that will cost you more $$ to fix than it would cost to purchase a refurbished Macbook®
www.macofalltrades.com/Apple_...171.htm
.. just live with it simply because mucking around with it will probably make it worse .and - if you're like me - you'll fry a personal microchip in your brain trying to figger the 'lil sucker out ..lol..
