Usually I can log in to the internet from my PowerBook at work.. but from time to time, I get a Network Timeout Error. Then I need to power off and reboot the mac... anyone one why this takes place.. and what else I can do?

You haven't got a huge amount of R A M operating on an older Mac®, do you ?
Network time out errors are a function of your workplace's server farm , in general , how large and how fast it is
It is like a dropped connection . See if you use dual ISDN, fibre optic or. .whatver to communication wiht the outside world
( not L A N but your W A N )
Try to speak with your office tech - geek - nerd and ask him or her to diagnose the problem
Timeout errors can vary from milliseconds to two and 1/2 to even three minutes , expecially when you are using HyperTexT Protocol Secure
or H T T P S
It sound to me , offhand , that they , your firm , need to add more server or connectivity capacity
just a guess . a lot of the linuX® places try to implement is really s l o w , too ( Red Hat , etc ) . Could be the macosX ( BSD uniX )
use can use this tool to test speed and connectivity
