I've got a G4 and it keeps freezing up on me whenever I do anything. Needless to say this makes it difficult when trying to write new music. So I was wondering how hard is it to completely wipe the drive and do a clean new install?
Any help or tips would be great.
Thanks

Re: Easiest way to wipe the HD?
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 8:42 AMDuring the installation of the OS, it will ask if you want to upgrade the existing installation, or do a fresh install. Selecting fresh install will wipe the disk first.
Wiping and reinstalling seems a bit drastic, though. Have you tried running a 'Fix Permissions' from Disk Utility? How much memory do you have in the system? More may help. How full is your system disk? If it's very full, it may be interfering with the swap space for virtual memory. Freeing up space on your system disk will help, as will adding more memory.

Re: Easiest way to wipe the HD?
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 7:05 PMThanks for the suggestions and I will try the re-install, but the last time I did that I ended up having the same issues. I will still try that and now for an experiment in trying to keep everything intact before I do that. -

Re: Easiest way to wipe the HD?
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 7:36 AMDoing a fresh install of OS X doesn't automatically wipe the hard drive, but there is an option that will allow you to do so, either with a single pass of zeros or multiple passes of random data (a single pass of zeros will be fine for your purpose). Look for a button that says "Options".
Also, there is no magnet that a typical person has access to that's strong enough to wipe a hard drive, and even if there were you wouldn't want to do that because it would also erase the information about where the individual data tracks are on the physical disk and render the drive unusable.
Given your symptoms I'd also be suspicious of your memory. You should have a Hardware Diagnostics CD that came with your Mac. Boot your system from that disk and run the diagnostics a few times. As long as you're doing all this, I'd also suggest you "zap your PRAM" by booting the system while holding the "command-option-P-R" keys down until you hear the boot chime a second time. Finally, your system may be old enough that it needs a new battery, which you should be able to find by looking at the mother board - it should look like a very short AA battery. They're not real hard to find, but you might have to go to a few places or to a specialty computer store, such as "Batteries Plus" to find one.
HTH - Good luck!

Re: Easiest way to wipe the HD?
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 2:33 PMDo you have an external bootable drive?
that would be the best thing....
install the OSX on a Firewire drive.
now you can boot from that....
