Airport instability issues, 5.4.2

I'm wondering if anyone else here has had this issue, and if so if they have found a workaround:

I am running Leopard and recently ran an update. Now my wifi connection is very unstable, dropping out frequently to the point I just give up using it and have to switch to ethernet.

I posted this question in the MAC OSX Tribe but didn't get much response. Then it struck me that I should have tried here instead.

I researched this using keywords on both Google and in mac forums and have seen some discussion on this, but so far haven't found anything that has resolved the issue for me. Basically what I've seen discussed is Airport Utility's software update 5.4.2 having issues, as well as possibly the recent firmware update as well. I've downgraded my software to 5.3.2 but seem to be unable to downgrade my firmware which it seems is only be available by holding the option key down when you select "check for updates" from within the Airport Utility menu. Supposedly holding the option key down is supposed to bring up a menu that allows you to select legacy firmware installs but I've unable to make this happen.

Some random facts about the issue:

- My connectivity seems okay as long as I am right next to the Base Station.

- If I close my MacBook Pro for a moment and reopen I often get connectivity back temporarily.

- Yes, I have tried restarting both my cable modem and Base Station.

- All other machines (all without the most recent Apple software update) seem to function fine, including another identical MacBook Pro here (identical except I have not done the recent Apple software update).

Anyone?

Help.

Thanks in advance.

    Alan ,
    . .i haven't had this issue since i stopped using my 15" TiPowerbook with the Airport® P C M C I A card
That having been said , you still will not like my answer . But it's an E Z solution
Simply roll back to the last ver. that worked for you . Newer versions do not provide that much more in the way of servicability any way , i think . Apple® is not nearly as backward compatible as they used to be
Through-put speed and security is more a function of distance to a base station and bus and processor speed in most normal cases . Also , ( and with reference to Leopard ) , leave 20 GIGS free on your hard drive for swap file space . It occurs to me that uniX has some upper and lower limits in this regard and also with accessing > 1 G I G R A M ( for that matter ) for protected virtual memory . One G I G R A M and 2 0 G I G H D swap files were unthinkable back in 1 9 9 3 when A T & T started lisencing uniX to I B M ( as A I X) , H P ( as HPuX ) and the NeXt computer company ( as what we use now ) .LinuX is something different but similar
Before Airport® cards i used Sierra Wireless® and Cisco® cards ( and Verizon®'s Ricohet ) for war driving in and around D C within the beltway
The beauty of Apple ® in cases like this is that you can download that version you were using from their software site . .all the way back to the beginning and System 2.7 , the original 1 9 8 4 operating system for the Mac +
    That's cool .One i can still make l i v e stereo color music videos from Apple® 1 9 9 9 Powerbook 145 PowerPC laptops and software at concerts
    h t h ,
    Steve
