how to set up AirPort extreme?

topic posted Thu, March 20, 2008 - 10:12 AM by  Anju
I"m not sure what is going wrong, but I can't seem to get my airport extreme (old version that looks like a space ship) to work. It's all lit up, but I can't get online, and my personal network doesn't show up as an option to connect to. In my previous apt it worked okay, but I could never connect or would get bumped off unless if I was using it in the middle of the night. But here at my new place, my network won't show up at all.....

is there some kind of trick to this? My set up is this - a PowerMac G5 (my roommate's), comcast for the internet, my macbook, and the old AirPort Extreme.

I would definitely try selecting a different channel (to resolve the 'only in the middle of the night' issue). Most wireless devices use the default channel (6) which causes them to conflict with eachother. Also 2+ gigahertz cordless phones can interfere with wireless network transmissions. Try using a program like MacStumbler, on your laptop, to see what wireless networks/channels are in operation in your area. Thant may give you a good idea what channel not to use:

Also keep in mind that, if the AirPort Base Station is not your primary router, it will need to be configured as a bridge. In that case, this may help:

    HHmmm,
what he said, too..soudns like you have used your Airoprts® before..have you tried ' war dirivng yet to see if you can acess any other networks yet ?
From the top..shut down the macbook®, .unplug it also...remove the battery..crack it, ( remove the the keyboard using the two tabs, i think ).. open ..make sure the airport card is securely seated in it's slot - jiggle it - and then power it up again.with the battery inserted . ..it may ask you if you want to power the card up. . ( i use a TiPowerbook ), if so , hit OK or YES
Open up the - Internet Connect - program onthe macbook®. .hit the - AIr Port tab again - .it may look like the picture i just posted . . and if so..i'd suggest making sure the G5's computer's base station is closer than 30 feet from the Macbook® . .line of sight works best.. and that the USB cable is in it firmly, also..antenna's up on everything...now
if it doesn't look like what i posted you are still ok.. even better..it may have connected already. . presuming the G5 has been set up correctly as the base station..
just hit the ' Network ' drop down menu onthemacbook® and look for the name of the Airport base station over on the G5..it'll have a funny name..like ' linksys' or something..
in theory..lol..let us know how it proceeds..printer problems are worse.

Thanks for offering help, but so far no luck:-( My Macbook works fine wirelessly in other locations, if that info helps. Also, when the comcast guy originially set up the airport for me here in the new place, it all worked fine - but it was in an inconvenient plug, so all I did was move it to a different outlet. But apparently that screwed everything up.

..btw - i just bought this great printer at the only Office Max® here in Hawai'i
      It's a HP Photosmart D5360 - $83 bux US & change. Here's the scoop -
Not only is it Apple® compatible all the way back to osX 2.whatever 'till now
, one can take almost A N Y flash memory stick \ card and shove it in it and it will print gourgeous
4" x 6" color prints w / o even connecting it to the computer - stand alone like
Uh, it was an impulse purchase i have putting off ever since my 1984 Panasonic PX 91 dot matrix went sour ( joke )
Yeah , i know the ink is the thing . . . .but our Office Max® refills cartridges whilst you wait...& wait
      Invent® & Embrace change® ( toungue firmly placed in cheek )
A T & T is going to and still struggling with Ubuntu®, btw. The iPhone has thrown them for a serious loop √

I will try doing this again - and check my wires. I think the wires may be plugged in wrong by my roommate after he moved it. I can't think of what else it could be, since it was indeed working very briefly, maybe when he moved the plug he also disconnected and reconnected the wires wrong, though I don't see why he would have done that.

        .yeah,
That's probably what it was. Most mac® problems - like > 80% - are hardware related and not software..
My particular problems are all ' operator error, ' but i am just dumb that way..lol.

Okay, so everything seems to be hooked up, and my laptop shows that I am connected to my network, and it says that I am connected to the internet via ethernet, but when i open up firefox or safari, it just says at the bottom "looking up gmail.com", and then never manages to connect. I get the "server not found" message.

Right now I have the desktop computer and the airport extreme connected to the comcast modem, which is correct, right?

Is it possible to just connect the airport router to the comcast modem and then have both the desktop and the laptop work wirelessly? Once my roommate said that it couldn't be done, that one needs to be "hardwired", whereas the last time he said that it was possible, but that both computers would have slow internet access. I don't know what's right and wrong here....

        Anjali,
yes • "Is it possible to just connect the airport router to the comcast modem and then have both the desktop and the laptop work wirelessly? ". Just try pluggin the Comcast® Linksys® router in to the Airport® via either the USB or the Ethernet cables. The Ethernet cable is like a twisted pair phone line cable but w i d e r & i am sure you know what a USB cable looks like. You can't really fry anything with either of them because they use very low voltage and amperage.
        1) on the Macbook®..power up the Airport® card, via system preferences --> internet connect -> airport
.2) now with the G5..and system preferences --> internet connect -> airport--> turn it on and see if it works..
        .good idea !
