powermac g4

topic posted Sun, April 6, 2008 - 6:15 PM by  michael
I have the PowerMac g4 Digital Audio Edition. I bought it at a pawn shop, and I think the logic board maybe going bad. It had os 9 on it and I went to install os x 10.3. As it started letters were missing from the words randomly. So I took the HD out and put it in my iMac and installed 10.3. I put the HD back in and it booted into firmware. Now I downloaded the firmware update for it. How do I install the firmware. And whatever more advice you can give would be appreciated Thank You... Mike

    Mike,
..the firmware should install more or less automatically depending on whether you updating os 9.x or macosX...even both
.under system 9.x start 'er up holding the option and splat ( Apple® =) keys down simultainiously.
.it'll chime a couple of times thus clearing the P-R A M - time date, etc...could be bad NICAD clock batteries , also..
..then just extract and install the firmware package after you've set the time and date to the correct ..value
    .i am thinking you may have some bad R A M installed..instead...
..both you and the previous poster..might do well to invest in Techtool®.
.it'll tell you what many of the hardware issues are..if that be the case..
    hope this helps . . .
    alo'ha

well, after i used my iMac to install os x, i put it back in the powermac. the grey firmware screen came up telling me to type mac-boot or shut-down. i typed in mac-boot and it went to a plain grey screen and no loading or installing of anything. what do I do now?

        crap,
..you rooted your own machine , Mike . you are in mac osx uniX territory, now..
..not to worry it's still alive and living..you could try typing " fsck - y " in the gray area, hit the return button.. but . . .screw that
..it's time to pull out what ever system disks \ backups you still have and reinstall some version of a newer opeerating system
fergitabout sys 9.x plz.D O N O T try to re-install it ( only as our last resort =) Power Mac confuses me . Tipowerbook makes sense to me
How much Hard Drive disk storage space do you have in this beast ? Does it have a DVD or just a CD drive ? if only CD you must - or should - reinstall macosX 3.9 from the twoor three disks If you have a DVD reader just go fer the latest DVD OS you can get for $100US ≠ from apple® or a friend When you can read some particular disk ..reformat the hard drive as Extended - Journaled without the sys 9 drivers using Disk Utility.. you get to Disk Utility from the CD or DVD by going up to the^^ blue apple ^^ and then ..next to it ..hitting the drop down menu.. this is whilst it is saying " Install "..from the OS installer program. . . if you can read a D V D just install Leopard ® and go with that..
it's the simplest solution ..in expensive , also hope this helps..do that and get back to us..it could still be some wierd thing like dead clock batteries..
btw - that gray unix CLI ( command line interface =) screen ..does it show a time ? It should
